Senior Scientist, Formulations development

Arsenal Medical is an early-stage, medical device company that is developing innovative medical products for localized therapies. We are a multi-disciplinary team of biologists, chemists, materials scientists, and engineers, working in close collaboration to understand the biology of disease and to create solutions that address some of today’s most challenging and critical unmet medical needs.  Arsenal Medical has created a state-of-the art research and development environment in the Boston metropolitan area.

We currently have an opening for a senior-level scientist with experience in polymer chemistry and formulations development.  This position will support our program to develop a novel medical device based on an in-situ foaming material.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Develop new synthetic strategies to prepare prepolymers
  • Synthesize, purify and characterize prepolymers using air-free techniques
  • Develop foam formulations that integrate prepolymers to meet target specifications
  • Use established test methods and create new test methods as necessary to evaluate foam formulations
  • Support bench-top testing and scale-up of foam formulations for pre-clinical evaluation
  • Provide updates  at weekly team meetings on experimental outcomes, conclusions, and future work plans
  • Draft technical reports and intellectual property filings as appropriate
  • Direct junior-level scientists in the development of prepolymers and foam formulations
  • Work with cross-functional team members to select and refine foam formulations based on performance in bench-top and preclinical tests

Qualifications

  • MS/PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science or related discipline
  • Between 1 – 3 years (5+ years with a MS) of post-graduate experience in polymer synthesis, purification, and characterization
  • Ability to  conduct independent research to develop materials and work in a team setting to test formulations
  • Prior experience in the medical device industry and/or developing materials for medical applications is desired
  • Previous experience with the following analytical techniques is required: NMR, GPC, DSC, FTIR, SEM, HPLC, rheometry, UV/fluorescence assays, and Instron testing
  • Proficient in basic computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ChemDraw, Scifinder)
  • Excellent verbal communication, presentation and technical writing skills
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, small medical device start-up
  • Immediate availability
